Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers"
Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers"
The term "Cazetier" originates from "Castel", the parcel situated just above the Château de Gevrey. It is one of the rare "Têtes de Cuvée" to not have been reclassified as a Grand Cru in the 1930's. Along with "Lavaux-Saint-Jacques" and "Clos Saint-Jacques", this climat is considered to be one of the best Premiers Crus in Gevrey. The Domaine has owned half of the appellation since 2013.
Winemaker notes
Deep ruby red hue with an intense and complex nose characterised by red fruits, toast and subtle roasted notes. The palate is rich and round with a firm structure and direct tannins. This remarkably powerful wine offers a silky mouthfeel and exceptional length.
2020
Burghound 91-94♥: Once again there is a lovely sense of freshness to the more restrained, even brooding, dark berry fruit nose that is cut with hints of the sauvage and just turned earth. The dense, powerful and gorgeously textured larger-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a complex, balanced and sneaky long finale. Excellent potential here.
Wine Advocate 93-95+: The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, dark chocolate, spices and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's elegantly muscular, with a deep and multidimensional core and a long, expansive finish. It's worth a special effort to seek out.
James Suckling 95: Explosive nose of sour cherry with notes of wet earth and spice, then a very energetic and structured, medium-bodied palate that doesn't leave any doubt, thanks to the intensity and wonderful harmony. Very long, focused finish that's very cool and clean. Drink or hold.
2021
Burghound 91-93♥: There is better layering and much more sauvage character present on the smoky nose of wild dark currant, game and a whiff of herbal tea. The medium weight plus flavors possess a beguiling texture along with a pronounced minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately austere finale that displays notably better depth and persistence. Very good quality here.
Wine Spectator 94: Alluring for its exotic spice aromas and strawberry, cherry and floral flavors, this silky, inviting red is balanced, with vanilla and toasty oak notes lingering on the aftertaste. Approachable now, this should improve in the next year or two.
2022
Burghound 92-95♥: A more discreet if still easily perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, forest floor and a more subtle hint of the sauvage. The super-sleek, intense and beautifully textured medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the powerful, youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finale that displays excellent length. One to look for.
Wine Advocate 93-95: The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is beautiful, bursting with aromas of sweet raspberries and plums mingled with rose petals, blood orange and subtle notions of lavender and potpourri. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's deep and layered, with a multidimensional core of fruit, supple tannins and a saline finish.
James Suckling 95-96: Effusive, almost enveloping nose of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries. Ripe and generous with stacks of fine tannin that are already so beautifully integrated. Very easy to love.
Decanter 93: Since their 2013 purchase of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, Faiveley is by far the largest landowner in this top-quality premier cru, with its steep incline and thin soils shielded from the cool of the Combe de Lavaux. In 2022, it delivered a marvellous wine, impressively substantial with the abundant tannic grip and depth to compliment the lovely cherry fruit and fresh floral notes with a hint of citrus on the nose.
