Details
There’s no doubt that Chambertin is considered one of Burgundy's top five Grands Crus. Its central position on a gently sloping, slightly cool and windy hillside gives it an exceptional texture. At the heart of this terroir lies a deep soil, delicately coated with a mantle of limestone scree and silt, patiently deposited over millennia and interwoven by the meticulous hand of man and his centuries-old cultivation work. Chambertin, slightly less steep than Clos de Bèze, benefits from a cooler breeze, provided by the nearby Combe Grisard, which brings winds from the hills. Ideally facing east, this terroir enjoys the best exposure to the sun, especially the morning sun. Nestled mid-slope, this terroir has a remarkable capacity to absorb water, making Chambertin one of Burgundy's finest terroirs. The wine's deep red colour, captivating bouquet, and refined notes of red fruit reveal an exceptional depth and complexity of flavour.
Winemaker notes
2022: A remarkable structure and depth characterise this firm, noble wine. Its fresh and radiant fruit is complemented by a subtle, refined reduction, promising excellent aging potential.
2018
Burghound 93-95: In contrast to the exuberance of many of the wines, here the nose is all but mute and requires aggressive swirling to coax the timid aromas of softly spicy and decidedly cool aromas of red and black currant, humus-tinged earth and plenty of floral nuances. The racy, tight and almost painfully intense big-bodied and muscular flavors also exhibit an abundance of minerality that adds lift to the compact, linear and subtly persistent finish. This is presently a compact block and a wine that is likely to require at least a decade to become approachable and reward 20+ years.
2021
Burghound 93-95: Here the somber nose is also intensely floral with a cool and highly restrained array of red berries, spice and sauvage scents. There is excellent volume and energy to the big-bodied, intense and overtly muscular flavors that terminate in a mineral-driven, dusty, moderately austere and beautifully long finish that is compact, built-to-age and balanced. This is a classically styled Cham that should age gracefully for years and one that will need at least a decade first.
2022
Burghound 94-97: Firm reduction. There is again superb volume and almost painful intensity to the succulent but quite powerful broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract while delivering superb length on the compact, serious, austere and built-to-age finale. This is one of the stars of the 2022 vintage and highly recommended.
