Details
Nectar Dei, the super-premium wine, an extraordinary cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, was christened after the ancient name of the Nittardi estate discovered in a document from 1183.
As is the tradition of Nittardi, the first bottles of this new wine were presented to Pope Benedict XVI — just as Michelangelo Buonarroti did in the 16th century when he, the owner of the estate at the time, paid tribute to the popes Julius II and Leo X by presenting them with, to use Michelangelo’s own words, “the genuine wine of Nittardi”.
Winemaker notes
Deep red with hints of purple color. On the nose ripe notes of cassis, blackberries and raspberry combined with tobacco and leather. Nicely concentrated with lush, rounded tannins and elegant notes as black cherries and licorice on the palate. Long and rich finish where the complexity of the wine shines through. Nectar Dei 2014 has a very good ageing potential.
2019
Wine Advocate 93: This is a certified organic wine that is packaged in a heavy glass bottle. A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Petit Verdot, 20% Merlot and 10% Syrah, the 2019 Maremma Toscana Nectar Dei reveals an inky dark appearance with rich tones of blackberry, chewy black plum, spice and cured leather. The wine excels in terms of saturation and richness, although the mouthfeel is relatively contained and not too heavy. This is a production of 7,000 bottles.
James Suckling 93: Interesting aromas of blackcurrants, dried sea weed and blackberries with some black-walnut undertones. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with a fresh finish. Give it two or three years to soften. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2024.
2020
Wine Advocate 90: In a heavy glass bottle, the Nittardi 2020 Maremma Toscana Nectar Dei is an organic blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 15% Merlot all aged in a barrique and tonneaux (with 20% new wood) for 24 months. The house style does prioritize the oak, and in fact, the bouquet is quite robustly weighed down by cinnamon, nutmeg and toasted coconut shavings. Some 10,000 bottles were made. To say this is a full-bodied wine is almost an understatement, and you get savory barbecue and mahogany, with some sweet blackberry confit, on the richly textured close.
James Suckling 94: Deep and complex on the nose with spiced plums and ripe blackberries as well as hints of sweet licorice, aged tangerine peel, chocolate and dark earth. Some tarry undertones, too. Full and opulent with very fine, silky tannins that have a firm grip over the palate, framing the intense and succulent fruit. Lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2025.
Vinous 94: The 2020 Nectar Dei is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Syrah from vineyards in Maremma. A plush, succulent wine, the 2020 races across the palate with copious dark fruit, mocha, leather, licorice, spice and espresso. Nectar Dei is not especially subtle, but I am not sure that matters.
