Details
Cros Parantoux is a fine example of a terroir revealed by a man: of a virtually uncultivated terroir, which nonetheless is well oriented towards the east, but difficult to work. Henri Jayer succeeded in obtaining quintessential Vosne-Romanée from it. The vineyard plot is sloping, stony, the soil is not deep, the situation is cool. The Jayer family still owns the largest part of the appellation, but we are happy to be able to work about three quarters of an acre of it. Our smallest cuvée, but our most famous!
Winemaker notes
An opulent, structured wine, both impressive and demonstrative. The acidity is often high and tightens this wine in the finish, especially when it is young, but we cannot speak of austerity, as the first impression on the palate is fat and smooth. A wine which gives you a feeling of generosity.
2022
Burghound 93-96: A decidedly ripe yet fresh nose offers up notes of poached plum, earth and wood along with an abundance of spice and similar exotic tea elements. The sleek and almost painfully intense flavors possess imposing size, muscle and power while delivering first-rate persistence and depth on the well-balanced and youthfully austere finish. 2022 is a markedly powerful vintage for the Méo Cros and a wine that should amply repay 15 to 20 years of cellaring. It may not be one of the all-time great vintages for this legendary wine but it's seriously impressive all the same.
Vinous 94-96: The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru is matured entirely in new oak as usual. It has a very controlled bouquet, less flamboyant than Emmanuel Rouget's, that I tasted a week earlier (I believe he picked a little later). Black cherries, iodine and crushed strawberry on the nose, dried violets emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. This is refined with impressive mineralité, and very focused with an almost understated finish considering the Premier Cru in question. Very sustained, though. Excellent, but very nuanced and a long-term proposition.
