Details
As its name - "les Rouges du Bas” - does not indicate, this vineyard plot of about 1 acre, is situated at the upper limit of the Échezeaux appellation. The altitude explains perhaps the aromatic freshness often found in this wine, even though its east/south-east orientation also influences its early maturity. The nature of the soil changes with the altitude: lighter and lighter as you get higher.
Winemaker notes
Échezeaux is loyal to its appellation through the finesse of its attack on the palate and its overall balance. But it's also a wine with pronounced acidity, which gives it freshness and structure and bestows upon it a sometimes austere finish.
2021
Burghound 93-95: A mix of reduction, wood and background spice-infused-aromas leads to big-bodied and extremely rich, even suave and succulent, flavors that possess an abundance of sappy dry extract and a taut muscularity before culminating in sneaky long, powerful and robust finale. This also possesses excellent development potential.
2022
Burghound 92-94: Once again the nose is extremely ripe yet fresh with its aromas of cassis, mocha, poached plum, spiced tea and sandalwood, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The sleek, rich and vibrant flavors possess both good volume and punch that contrasts somewhat with the dusty, serious and long finish where a touch of warmth gradually emerges. This isn't as vibrant as the Rognets though I sense that this is more a phase than something that will persist.
