Details
Perhaps the prettiest vineyard of the estate: oriented directly east, on the magic hill of Corton, in the northern part of the appellation in Ladoix-Serrigny, Clos Rognet is still surrounded by its old walls, whose charm is enhanced by the small size of the vineyard plot: just over one acre. The soil is of average depth, and fairly light in structure.
Winemaker notes
In our cellars, Corton represents silkiness, smoothness and authority. Its vines produce a robust wine with astonishing ageing capacity. It is always very mature and therefore offers us sweet aromas and a well-rounded texture; its structure is sometimes pronounced in the finish. Even if this wine may appear to be generous, it nevertheless commands respect.
2022
Burghound 92-94: A background dollop of menthol does not interfere with the appreciation of the equally ripe aromas of cassis, spicy black raspberry and rose petal that are trimmed in soft spice and earth wisps. The mouthfeel of the bigger-bodied flavors is rich yet quite sleek though with more evident minerality on the firm, well-detailed and solidly complex finale that goes on and on. As is often the case, this is presently compact, serious and absolutely built to repay extended keeping.
Vinous 93-95: The 2022 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru comes from 0.4 hectares of vine planted in 1927 and matured in 80% new oak. This has a more high-toned bouquet with showy black cherry and raspberry fruit. The oak is present but neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid, sinewy black fruit, fine grip and structure and more substance on the finish than the Clos Vougeot. This might be overlooked within Méo-Camuzet's portfolio. It shouldn't be.
Decanter 94: The Clos Rognet is not the largest of Méo's parcels on the hill of Corton, but it is perhaps the most distinctive. It is a Clos of 0.45 hectares at the bottom of the climat Rognet et Corton in Ladoix, down the slope from the Clos des Cortons Faiveley. In 2022, Méo worked hard to control yields here, and the result is concentrated and powerful, with a mulberry fruit touched with dark chocolate and a firmly tannic and dense texture. This wine should open in five to seven years and will age for decades.
