Musigny and Petits Musigny are situated on a rocky terrace overlooking the Clos de Vougeot parcel and facing the rising sun. There was previously a Gallo-Roman settlement here owned by a certain Musinus who gave his name to what would later become one of the most prestigious terroirs in the whole of Bourgogne Ten vine owners currently produce Musigny Grand Cru wines and we are the smallest with just three "ouvrées" in surface area. We own two small parcels, one in the North and the other in the heart of the appellation.
2015
Burghound 93-96: Generous wood frames an elegant, pure, airy and sophisticated nose that consists of essence of black cherry, spice and floral aromas. There is an almost pungent minerality on the detailed, sappy and powerful big-bodied flavors that possess a wonderfully appealing texture on the wonderfully long and slightly warm finale. This is impressive but it's exceptionally ripe, indeed to the point where there isn't quite the same vivacity compared to the other grands crus in the range. Still, if your taste runs to lavishly opulent and seductive Musigny, this is one to hunt for.
Vinous 93-96: (just a single new 150-liter barrel of this wine, vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha and pistachio. Plush, dense and deep, conveying more saline minerality and deep soil tones than primary dark fruits in the early going. But this wine boasts compelling sweetness and finishes with dusty, thoroughly ripe tannins and outstanding length. (Incidentally, Faiveley will actually have two different bottlings of Musigny from the 2015 vintage as they purchased a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family just after the harvest of 2015. The new wine will be bottled in magnums, which Faiveley plans to open in 2025 as part of the family's 200th-anniversary festivities. Beginning with 2016, there will be a single estate Musigny consisting of about 600 bottles.)
