A short 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Pinoli vineyard is the coolest and also the smallest site in the Deep End of Anderson Valley. The influence from the Pacific allows for a slow, mild and long growing season which allows the grapes to develop a balance of perfection in terms of flavours and acidity.
Soils are made of a mixture of loam and fine gravel + light clays. Wines from this cool site are often robust and richly layered with black fruits like plums, cassis and black berries.
Winemaker notes
Dark red garnet color. Aromas and flavors of black fruit: plum, blackberry and black cherry dominate with hints of stone and mushroom. There is an earthy quality to the wine, with clean textures, smooth tannins and balanced acidity. Orange citrus hint on the finish, long and smooth.
2017
Wine Advocate 92: Pale ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Pinoli Vineyard begins with notes of tar and scorched earth, segueing to licorice, dried citrus peel, blood orange, cranberries and rhubarb. Medium-bodied, it's fresh, grainy and concentrated, offering a good blend of fruit, earth and spice and a long, nuanced finish. 98 cases were made.
Vinous 93: The 2017 Pinot Noir Pinoli Vineyard emerges from the coolest of the three estate vineyards. A Pinot of real exuberance, the Pinoli offers tons of immediacy. Bright red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, kirsch, lavender and spice race out of the glass. Soft, supple and engaging, the 2017 will drink well right out of the gate. Winemaker Darrin Low gave the 2017 16 months in barrel, with 20% new oak.
Wine Enthusiast 92: This full-bodied wine is deep and flavorful, topping black-fruit flavors with layers of complex black-tea and forest-floor accents. The mouthfeel is broad but grippy, showing moderate tannins and good acidity.
