Moulin-à-Vent is an ancient vineyard, whose roots date back to the 1st century with the arrival of the Romans. The “Torreins” wine was then approved by King Louis XIV and entered the French court in the 17th century, thus marking the beginning of the growing reputation of the Cru.
Winemaker notes
On the nose, this sunny vintage cuvée expresses notes of cherry and violet. On the palate, the wine is energetic and powerful, expressing the freshness of the terroir. It can sometimes seem more closed when just opened, proof of great aging potential.
2019
Burghound 88: Perfumed and elegant aromas of essence of gamay, pepper, anise and a suggestion of earth leads to supple, forward and easy-going middleweight flavors that display just a mild tang on the lingering and ever-so-mildly rustic finale.
Wine Advocate 91: Revealing notes of sweet berry fruit, espresso roast, smoke, candied peel and plums, framed by a touch of oak spice and vanillin, the 2017 Moulin-à-Vent is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a fine but firm chassis of tannin and a delicately wood-inflected finish. This is an elegant middleweight from the Château de Moulin-à-Vent that should come into its own after a year or two in the cellar.
Wine Enthusiast 93: A selection of fruit from the three best parcels of the estate, this wine shows great ripeness, solid tannins and impressive berry fruits. It is developing into a fine wine that needs more aging.
2020
Burghound 92: Discreet if very pretty aromas grudgingly offers up a broad array of floral nuances on the ripe aromas of both red and blue gamay, pepper and spice wisps. The succulent and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess good verve as well as good detail, all wrapped in a solidly powerful, compact and serious finale that delivers excellent length. This too is very good and notably denser if perhaps not quite as refined while also offering fine value.
Wine Enthusiast 91: Full bodied, this wine has ripe tannins and layers of black fruits. Acidity and structure mark it out for long-term aging, giving a rich wine that should be ready from 2025.
Wine Spectator 90: A fresh, svelte version, with black pepper, crushed rock and wet earth, showing serious savory power and vibrancy as well as a salted beam of iron shavings. Reveals singed sandalwood and bay leaf on the sanguine finish.
