Chateau d'Aqueria: Diverse Jewel of Southern Rhône Valley
Share
Spanning 100 hectares, Château d’Aqueria sits uniquely between two appellations - Tavel and Lirac. The vineyards of Aqueria are home to a diverse palette of grape varieties, which enables the production of expressive wines full of character and elegance, while preserving the biodiversity of the environment.
Surrounding the Château, the Tavel terroir features light sandy clay soils which are ideal for producing the domain’s best rosés with fruity complex characteristics. Crafted primarily from Grenache, Syrah, Clairette, and Mourvèdre, with Cinsault and Bourboulenc completing the harmony, Tavel was the first rosé to be classified in France after the first Appellations of Controlled Origin (AOC) were established in 1936. It has now become an iconic gastronomic rosé and recognised as THE rosé of ‘terroir’.
Adjacent, Lirac lies on the right bank of the Rhône, and produces fresh and robust reds predominantly from Grenache, bolstered up by Syrah and Mourvèdre with a touch of Cinsault. To the East of the Chateau, the vines of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Viognier thrive in calcareous soils, each playing their part to add to the complexity of the multi-layered, fruity Lirac whites.
Acquired by the Guigal family in May 2022, this southern jewel now benefits from the dedication and attention of Marcel and Philippe Guigal who passionately accompany the Château’s winemaking processes.
